Trust on God

Date: August 26, 2018/Speaker: Pastor Terry Coe/Comments: 0
Today my message is ‘Trust on God’. Last week we looked at ‘Call on God’. We found that God will hear our call and respond. Today we are looking at trusting and depending on God, which is what faith is all about. It is through faith that we can trust God and depend on the love of God that Molly’s poem describes.

What is Trust?

Webster’s New World Dictionary gives this definition:

“The firm belief in the honesty, reliability etc. of another. Confident expectation, hope, etc. To have trust or faith: be confident.” 1

What is Depend?

Webster’s Dictionary shows:

“To be influenced or determined by something else. To be sure of. To rely on for support or aid.” 2

Psalm 20:7-8 NIV From a Psalm of David.

7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

8 They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.

Robert J. Morgan, in Nelson’s Book of Quotes, shares with us this quote:

J.O. Fraser, missionary to China stated: “Faith is like muscle which grows stronger and stronger with use, rather than rubber, which weakens when it is stretched.” 3

King David speaks a lot on trust, depend, faith, hope and salvation in the book of Psalms. Here are a few examples.

Psalm 28:7 NIV

7 The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to Him in song.

Psalm 32:10 NIV

10 Many are the woes of the wicked, but the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in Him.

Psalm 40:4 NIV

4 Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false Gods.

Psalm 112:7 NIV

7 He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

Psalm 62:5-8 NIV Another Psalm of David

5 Find rest, O my soul, in god alone; my hope comes from Him.

6 He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

7 My salvation and my honor depend on god; He is my mighty rock, my refuge.

8 Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.

1 Hudson Taylor, another missionary, is quoted: “Not a great faith we need, but a faith in a great God.” (pg. 283 Robert J. Morgan)

Then we can read about another great example of trust on God in the book of Daniel. This is where he refuses to pray to King Darius and openly prays to God. The punishment for this action was to be thrown into the lion’s den. King Darius has no choice but to do that, and in Daniel goes for an overnight sleep with the lions. Next morning King Darius rushes to the den to see if Daniel survived.

Daniel 6:23 NIV

23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.

There are many stories of trust on God and many times we are told by people to trust God.

Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV Solomon, son of David, King of Israel.

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

6 in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Romans 10:11 NIV Paul tells us:

11 As the scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in Him will never be put to shame.

Hebrews 11:6 NIV

6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

Trust, depend, hope, believe and have confidence in God! We do all these through faith in the love of God.

Work your faith muscle and grow every day into the person God wants you to be.
