Today my message is “From Everlasting to Everlasting You are God”!
For the past few weeks we have looked at the Easter story of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection and ascension. Today we are looking at our God who created us and our world and who will be with us forever.
We start with a verse from Psalm 90 – verse two.
Psalm 90:2
2 Before the mountains were born
or you brought forth the earth and the world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
Moses is in prayer as he writes this to God. He was a man of God who had been in the presence of God Almighty. He truly knew God as much as any of us can. He connects God’s creation of our world and us to the everlasting existence of God.
God gives us this confirmation of who He is:
Revelation 1:8 NIV
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Now let’s look at a few other Bible verses that talk about our everlasting God who made our world and us.
Nehemiah 9:5-6 NIV
5 And the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah—said: “Stand up and praise the Lord your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting.”
“Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise.
6 You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.
Charles H. Spurgeon explains verse two of Psalm 90 this way.
Before those elder giants (mountains) had struggled forth from nature’s womb,…the Lord was glorious and self-sufficient. ….God was, when nothing else was….In this Eternal One there is a safe abode for the successive generations of men. 1
Isaiah 40:28 NIV
28 Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.
Isaiah 45:18 NIV
18 For this is what the Lord says—
he who created the heavens,
he is God;
he who fashioned and made the earth,
he founded it;
he did not create it to be empty,
but formed it to be inhabited—he says:
“I am the Lord,
and there is no other.”
Matthew Henry gives us this insight into verse two:
“Before Thou hadst formed the earth and the world (that is, before the beginning of time) Thou hadst a being; …an eternal God, whose existence has neither its commencement nor its period with time, nor is measured by the successions and revolutions of it, but who art the same yesterday, to-day, and for ever, without beginning of days, or end of life, or change of time.” 2
Psalm 145:13 NIV
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures through all generations.
The Lord is faithful to all His promises
and loving toward all He has made.
Jeremiah 31:3 NIV
3 The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying:
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with loving kindness.”
1 Timothy 1:15-17 NIV
15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.
16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.
17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Mike Erre, in his book, “Astonished”, gives us this insight into God:
“The aim of our theological study, then, is always to move beyond our study into an encounter with the glorious God Himself; a God that no theology will ever be able to contain. God is personal, and persons are never puzzles to be solved, but rather are to be known and loved. The goal is not to get our theology right, but to enter into trusting and faithful relationship with the God whom our theology reveals. Worship (and astonishment, I would add) is the proper goal of theology.” Pg. 233
“We can know God but can’t ever fully figure Him out. And so we walk by faith and not by sight… May we never cease to be amazed and awestruck at what God has done for us in Jesus.” 3
Micah 4:5 NIV
5 All the nations may walk
in the name of their gods,
but we will walk in the name of the Lord
our God for ever and ever.
Galatians 1:3-5 NIV
3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,
4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
We will have eternal life, with God or separated from God, because God made us to be with Him forever. Some will accept Jesus’s gift of life with God and others will chose to be separated from God for eternity. Which do you choose?
We can truly say, if we have accepted the gift of life eternal with God,
Everlasting to Everlasting You are God!
