Last week we started looking at the Triune God (The Trinity), and we looked at Jesus Christ, the Son. Today on Father’s Day, we are looking at God as the good, good Father.
Here is another way to think of how God can be Father, Son and Holy Spirit all at the same time.
In his book, The Chemistry of the Blood, M.R. DeHaan, founder of the Radio Bible Class, notes that in saying “God is light,” the biblical authors are telling us something about the Trinity. A scientific analysis of sunlight reveals that it consists of three kinds of rays:
DeHaan writes, “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. We know the Godhead consists of Three Persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father corresponds to the chemical rays of sunlight; No man hath seen God at any time. The Son, who is the light of the world, corresponds to the light rays, the One whom we can see but not feel. The Holy spirit corresponds to the heat rays, since He is felt in the lives of believers but never seen.” 1
So, today we look at God the Father who is like the chemical rays of sunlight – so bright you cannot look directly at Him, but He is there!
Here is an example of being in the presence of God, the Good, Good Father.
2 Chronicles 7:1-3 NIV
1 When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple.
2 The priests could not enter the temple of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled it.
3 When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying,
“He is good; His love endures forever.”
In the Psalms, we find many references to God being good.
Psalm 34:8 NIV (David talking)
8 Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
Psalm 100:1-5 NIV
1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.3 Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Psalm 119:65-68 NIV
65 Do good to your servant
according to your word, O Lord.66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment,
for I believe in your commands.67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,
but now I obey your word.68 You are good, and what you do is good;
teach me your decrees.
Psalm 145:7-9 NIV
7 They will celebrate your abundant goodness
and joyfully sing of your righteousness.8 The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love.9 The Lord is good to all;
he has compassion on all he has made.
Since last week we looked at Jesus Christ being God, I thought it would be good to read the connection between God the Father and Jesus in His own words.
John 14:5-11 NIV (Thomas and Philip are asking questions of Jesus)
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.
11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.
So, God is Father and Son! God is a Good, Good Father!
Now how about all you fathers here today – are you good, good fathers? I am not putting you on the spot or trying to make you feel lacking. I am hoping that you are looking to God the Father for wisdom, direction and power to be the best dad you can be.
Kirk Giles, in his book “The Seasons of Fatherhood”, tells us:
“Without any doubt, you matter as a dad in every season of life. Statistics show the presence and influence of dad has a direct connection to the emotional, physical, and spiritual success of children… Fatherhood is one of the greatest blessings, privileges, responsibilities, and adventures you will ever participate in.
Dad, you are important, and you are needed. Always remember that.” 2
Jim Hughes, National President, Campaign Life Coalition, makes this statement in his June 2018 letter.
“The role of fathers has to be highlighted as crucial in the development of both boys and girls. Males as positive role models are urgently needed, as TV and movies prefer to put them down or marginalize their role.
Let us thank God for our fathers and other positive male role models for their part in helping us to develop as full human beings.” 3
All of us who are fathers or fathers-to-be need to realize that we can have the best training, mentorship and support system if we decide to walk with God daily.
Fatherhood is tough, just ask the greatest father who had to let his son die to save a people who had deserted Him.
That same Father gives every one of us the chance to reconnect with Him so that we can have the eternal relationship of being God’s children forever in His presence.
Ephesians 1:15-17 NIV
15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,
16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.
17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.
God is the Good, Good Father! Have a wonderful Father’s Day – walking with God the Father!
