Jesus Christ The Son

Good morning!

Today my message is “Jesus is God and Son!

For three Sundays we will look at the Triune God, the Trinity. We will see how the Bible teaches that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit – all one. I started with the Son since it was more appropriate to do the Father on Father’s Day. It does not matter which order you look at the Triune God – the truth is the same. This series came about from a question I received from several people, “How do we know and prove that the Trinity is real?”

First, let me make it clear that the word “Trinity” is not found in the Bible. Therefore, you cannot quote a verse that states that word. What we do find are many Scriptures that state that each of the three (Father, Son & Holy Spirit) are God.

Here are two commonly used passages joining all three as one.

2 Corinthians 13:14 NIV The Apostolic Benediction!

14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Matthew 28:19-20 NIV The great commandment!

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

God clearly states that He is the only God.

Here Isaiah quotes God, saying that there is no other God.

Isaiah 45:5-6 NIV

5 I am the Lord, and there is no other;
apart from me there is no God.
I will strengthen you,
though you have not acknowledged me,

6 so that from the rising of the sun
to the place of its setting
men may know there is none besides me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other.

So why do we consider Jesus as God and not just God’s Son?

Romans 9:5 NIV   Paul states Christ is God over all.

5 Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.

Then God gives us this truth about Jesus:

Heb. 1:1-3 NIV

1 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways,

2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.

3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Isaiah 46:9 NIV

9 Remember the former things, those of long ago;
I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me.

God does not lie, so He has clearly indicated that Jesus and God are one and the same.

John 1:1-5 NIV

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He was with God in the beginning.

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

John 1:14-18 NIV

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”

16 From the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another.

17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.

Titus 2:11-14 NIV

11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.

12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,

13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

God presented Jesus as His son when John baptized Jesus and when Jesus was transfigured.

Mark 1:9-11 NIV

9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

10 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.

11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

Matthew 17:1-5 NIV

1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

Look on the front of your bulletin and you will see the logo of the early Christian church – the fish symbol with the words “Jesus Christ God’s Son Savior”. We can truly believe that Jesus is both God and the Son.
